Personal Watercraft (PWC) Operation on the Spread Eagle Chain of Lakes

Wisconsin law prohibits operating a personal watercraft (PWC) above Slow-No-Wake speed within 200 feet of any shoreline on a lake. Slow-No-Wake is defined as the slowest speed possible while still maintaining steerage of the craft. This law is more restrictive than the general rule requiring all motorized watercraft to operate at Slow-No-Wake speed within 100 feet of docks, piers, or marked restricted areas.

On the Spread Eagle Chain, the geography—small lakes and narrow channels—means that most of the Chain is subject to Slow-No-Wake restrictions for PWCs. The only exceptions are the open waters of the larger lakes, and the channel between the east side of Bass Island and the east shore of Bass Lake.

Age & Certification Requirements

Under 16 years old: May not operate a PWC under any circumstances.

Ages 16 and up (born on or after Jan. 1, 1989): Must complete the Boating Safety Course to legally operate a PWC.

Adults may be cited for knowingly allowing an uncertified or underage individual to operate a PWC.

Be Safe. Be Responsible.

• Review the posted maps and signs at boat landings, including the map at North Lake Landing.

• Educate your guests and family members before allowing them to operate your PWC or boat.

• If you see unsafe or unlawful behavior on the water, a friendly reminder can go a long way in preventing accidents or fines.
